Interdisciplinary Degree Replaced University College

In july of 2008, the university disbanded the University College.  The students in the program were moved to the College of Liberal Arts, and now majoring in the interdisciplinary degree program.  Much of the curriculum is the same, and Chair Tim Gauthier and staff are working hard to continue to help students graduate with this unique degree.

The transition to liberal arts has been a relatively smooth one according to Gauthier.  "University studies and multidisciplinary studies are essentially synonymous departments and, as such, their amalgamation makes good academic sense.  With numerous departments falling under its purview, liberal arts is a good home for interdisciplinary studies".

The model used in University College - a sequence of courses ending with a capstone experience  - has been folded into the multidisciplinary studies and social science studies programs.  This will provide a stronger sense of structure and greater academic rigor to these programs.

Every effort is being made to ensure that students enrolled in university studies have the opportunity to graduate with a bachelor of university studies.  Approximately 170 students graduated with the degree during 2008-2009.  Students also have the option to transfer to interdisciplinary degree programs, and this is greatly facilitated through the Wilson Advising Center.

Chair Gauthier is impressed with the growth of the program so far.  "There are nearly 200 students enrolled in social science studies, and another 150 in multidisciplinary studies."
