Women's Studies Department Degree Program, 2008-2010 Undergraduate Catalog


A major and minor are offered in Women's Studies.  Students are eligible to enter the Women's Studies Program if they meet the following conditions. Students must be formally admitted to UNLV. At the time of applying for admission to the program, the grade point average in all college-level work must be a minimum 2.50. Students majoring in Women's Studies must earn a minimum of 124 credit hours, with 42 credits in courses numbered 300 or above.

In addition to University and College of Liberal Arts general education requirements, Women's Studies majors must take a minimum of 37 credits in Women's Studies courses, plus 3 credits from an approved list of multicultural courses and 6 credits in foreign languages.

1.     The following sequential core courses are required of all majors:

2.     A minimum of 3 credits in either WMST 498 (Internship) or WMST 499 (Independent Study) under the supervision of a Women's Studies Advisor.

3.     A minimum of 18 credits from an approved list of interdisciplinary courses and other courses crosslisted with academic departments. Because this is a rapidly expanding program, new courses are constantly being developed. 4.     3 credits from an approved list of multicultural courses. This requirement may simultaneously fill the university general education requirements, but must be in addition to courses required for the major. The list of these courses is updated regularly.

5.     2 courses in a foreign language. These credits must be sequential and must be taken in the same language. Neither a computer language nor American Sign Language will fulfill this requirement.

6.     For a minor, students must complete a minimum of 22 hours in Women's Studies courses, including:
