Despite what many students think, there is no specific major which gives an applicant an advantage in the admission process for medical school. You do not have to be a biology major to go to medical school. A recent study by Pfizer Pharmaceuticals concluded that majors in English, History, and Anthropology do well on the MCAT, and that a higher percentage of applicants from these and other Liberal Arts majors are admitted to medical school than the percentage of students that are accepted from more traditional pre-med majors. Many medical schools are actively recruiting majors in Liberal Arts because of their broad backgrounds, which generally include courses in humanities, social sciences, logic and critical thinking, and writing and communications. Students should focus on appropriate preparatory work, including courses in critical thinking, writing, and communication skills. A pre-med student can achieve academic and personal success by choosing a major which allows for personal and professional exploration in a topic which is interesting to the student.
