Welcome to the Political Science website. The department has a strong commitment to excellence in research, teaching, and service. Several faculty members have received awards for distinguished teaching and service. In addition, the research published by our faculty has increased the national and international visibility of UNLV.
Undergraduate Program
With over 440 majors, the Department of Political Science has one of the largest undergraduate
programs in the College of Liberal Arts. The department offers undergraduate coursework in several
subfields, including American politics, comparative politics, international relations, public law, political
theory, and public policy. Students who have specialized interests may enroll in independent study
courses.
The B.A. degree in Political Science provides students with a strong foundation to pursue careers in many different fields, including public policy analysis, public service, teaching, research, and the legal profession. As one step in enhancing the professional development of our undergraduate students, the department provides a variety of resources and opportunities, including Pre-Law advising and internship programs. Students also have opportunities to work with faculty on research projects. In recent years, our undergraduates have participated in national policy conferences, and they've worked in a number of internships in the public and private sectors. In addition, recent graduates have been admitted to highly selective graduate programs.
Graduate Programs
The Political Science department offers two graduate programs of study. Founded in 2008, the
department's new Ph.D. program specializes in Global Studies, with an emphasis on research and
training in international relations and comparative politics. Students enrolled in the M.A. program may
focus their research and coursework in any subfield of the discipline. Graduate assistantships, which are
competitive, provide students with valuable experience in teaching and research.
The department's graduate students are very active in the area of research. Several students have presented papers at the national meetings of Political Science associations, while other students have published research in selective, peer-reviewed outlets.
