Dr. Jara obtained a B.A. in Hispanic Languages and Literatures in the Pontificia Universidad Catolica del Peru. She received her master's degree and doctorate in Hispanic Linguistics, as well as the Certificate of Latin American Studies from the University of Pittsburgh. Before arriving at UNLV, Dr. Jara taught at the Universidad de Lima and other educational institutions in Peru. She also worked training bilingual indigenous teachers and doing field work in Peruvian Amazonian communities (1988-1992). In 1992, the Spanish International Cooperation Agency (AECI) awarded her a Scholarship to study in Madrid where she obtained the Diploma of Spanish Language and Literature Teachers. Her dissertation is on the use of the preterit and the present perfect in the Spanish of Lima. Her research interest is focused on the areas of Latin American dialectology and sociolinguistics, linguistic variation, language ideologies, bilingualism and Spanish in contact.

She has published articles on Spanish, language teaching and the use of technology for improving language learning. Currently, she is doing research on Spanish variation and language ideologies.
