Biography:
Dr. Bellver received her bachelor's degree from Northwestern University
and her master's as well as her doctorate from the University of California,
Berkeley. During her teaching career, Dr. Bellver has taught
over two dozen different courses that have included language as well
literature classes and have ranged from the freshman to graduate level. She
served as coordinator of lower division Spanish for twenty years and
as department chair in the early nineties. At present she is
the graduate coordinator. Besides her work for the department,
she has served on innumerable college and university committees. She
developed the committee on women's studies into a growing academic
program and became its interim director. Dr. Bellver also worked
on the regional and national levels on the behalf of the academic advancement
women. She has served on the editorial boards of Anales de
la Literatura Española and Letras Femeninas. She has
been invited to evaluate myriad manuscripts, scholarly records, and
grant or award proposals. She was a representative to the assembly
of the Modern Language Association and Vice-President of the Twentieth-Century
Spanish Association of America.
Dr. Bellver has published three monographs :El mundo poético de
Juan José Domenchina, Rafael Alberti en sus horas de destierro,
and Absence and Presence: Spanish Women Poets of the Twenties
and Thirties. She has also edited the complete works of
poetry of Concha Méndez. She has published scores of scholarly
articles and essays and more than one hundred book reviews. Her
work has appeared in major journals in the United States, Mexico,
and Spain.
In recognition of her service to the University, in 2005 Dr. Bellver
was awarded the lifetime Don Schmiedel Service Award. For her
efforts in creating women's studies at UNLV, an interview with her
was published in 2006 as part of Las Vegas Women Oral History Project. For
her outstanding record in teaching, service, and especially research,
in 1998, Dr. Bellver was granted the rank of Distinguished Professor
of Spanish.
