Biography:

Dr. Deborah Arteaga holds an M.A. in French linguistics from the University of Colorado; she received her doctorate in Romance linguistics from the University of Washington in 1990, specializing in historical Romance syntax. Currently, she is Full Professor in Spanish linguistics at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Dr. Arteaga has taught all levels of Spanish and French language and linguistics and has coordinated both Spanish and French instruction at the university level. She has published extensively in several tier-one journals (e.g., The Modern Language Journal,The French Review,Journal of French Studies). She has published two books, and co-edited another. Her publications focus on second language acquisition of Spanish and French, as well as on historical Romance syntax. In 1994 she received the Rita Deanin Abbey Teaching Award, a college-wide award, and in 2001, she received the Distinguished Teaching Award, a university-wide award. She has served in several administrative capacities, including Chair of the Department of Foreign Languages, Associate Dean of the College of Liberal Arts, and Coordinator of Enrollment Management and Special Projects for the Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost. She has also been elected to several prestigious positions in her profession, including President of the South Central Modern Language Association, and the Applied Linguistics Division of the Modern Language Association.
