UNLV students find that a specialty in French language and culture hones their language skills and prepares them for careers in business, the hotel industry, education, international studies, and science and technology.

Majoring in French Studies at UNLV ensures that a student not only graduates with a practical and fulfilling degree but also has links with the over 200 million people in 43 countries across 5 continents who speak French. Requirements for a Bachelor of Arts Major in French Studies at UNLV include, in addition to University and College of Liberal Arts requirements, a minimum of 36 credits of coursework with the following distribution.

 

Composition and Conversation (FREN 213, 214, 300, 301, 302, 401, 402) 12 credits
Linguistics (FREN 312, FOL 311, FOL 414, FOL 499) 3 credits
Literature 3-9 credits
Culture 6-9 credits
Upper-division French electives 3 credits

 

Requirements for a Bachelor of Arts Minor in French Studies at UNLV include, in addition to University and College of Liberal Arts requirements, a minimum of 18 credits of coursework.  These may include FREN 213 and FREN 214.  The 12 remaining credits are to be at the upper division (300-400) level, six of which must be in conversation and composition.

A UNLV-sponsored study abroad program in Pau, a city in southwestern France, is available to UNLV students. Offered by the University Study Abroad Consortium (USAC), this program provides courses to accommodate various majors and includes visits to Paris and Toulouse. Students can choose between summer and semester schedules. Scholarships are available for participant.
