PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
During the first year of the program students will not teach but instead immerse themselves in the discipline and in their coursework, taking a rich variety of graduate seminars as they decide on a field of study. Students entering with a BA degree will, during their fourth year of the program, again have a non-teaching year during which they will commence work on their dissertation.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Students may apply online for admission into the Department’s PhD program through UNLV’s Graduate College website at http://graduatecollege.unlv.edu. Application deadline is February 15 for fall admission. Students must have taken the GRE Verbal Aptitude Test and the GRE Advanced Subject Test in literature (offered only once in October and once in November before the application deadline) and have their scores sent to the English Department. They must also send to the Department 20-30 pages of writing samples in literary criticism and a one or two-page statement of what they propose to study in graduate school (which of course may be subject to change). Students should also provide two copies of their transcript, one sent to the Graduate College, and one to the English Department, and should arrange to have three letters of recommendation sent to the English Department testifying to their academic ability.
